On How To Use This Paper Properly, Please Introduction Ernest J. Gaines novel "A Lesson Before Dying" is a very powerful novel that can be read from many different perspectives, all of them at least slightly enlightening. It is the story of the unjust ruling against a black man, a simple black man who thinks of himself as not much more than a pig, and a black teacher who learns while trying to make a difference. The following paper examines the title of Gaines novel, how appropriate the title is and who learns and teaches the supposed "lesson." A Lesson Before Dying As mentioned in the introduction, this novel concerns a black man, Jefferson, who has been convicted of murder. It is doubtful that he really committed any murder because he is a relatively simple and somewhat unintelligent man it seems. However, the jury convicts him and he is sent to death row, and ultimately his execution. Grant is a teacher, a black man who has struggled to get where he is, and Jeffersons godmother asks Grant to help Jefferson die like a man, not a hog. Grant, is man troubled by the entire situation. He does not want to do this, but know he must. The titled of the book clearly refers to lessons being learned by both Jefferson and Grant. Jefferson, as noted, is a very simple man and Grant does his best to try to get through to him in some human manner. Jefferson, convinced he is not any better than a pig, is a reflection of the oppressed black man in society wherein he feels there is nothing of value to discover, think, or dream.
