he is focused completely on leading the largest information technology company in the world. Mark Hurd is CEO, president and chairperson of the Board for Hewlett-Packard (HP) (Lee, 2008). As an example of his single-mindedness on the company and not on the limelight, Hurd did not even attend the very prestigious World Economic Forum, which was held in Davos, Switzerland in 2008 (Lee, 2008). Business Week named Hurd their 2007 Businessperson of the Year (Lee, 2008). He was one of 20 top business leaders the organization names each year and that list included Steve Jobs and Rupert Murdoch but it was Mark Hurd that was singled out for his accomplishments at HP (Lee, 2008). He was singled out because of "his remarkable skill navigating the intensely competitive and complex computer business" (Lee, 2008). And, also because during the three years he had been CEO at that time, "HP has become a rare example of a tech company succeeding in the delicate balancing act of selling to both consumers and corporations" (Lee, 2008). At 50, Hurd is on the young side to take the helm of such an incredibly large complex technology company but he had already shown his ability as CEO of NCR. He is a different kind of leader. He is at once authoritarian and participatory. His orders to everyone were to reduce costs and increase revenue and he is open to suggestions on exactly how to accomplish that.
