in the Rocky Mountains by Isabella Bird The first question posed by the student asks, "Why is this book an important historical source?"
Even if the author of this book has a limited view regarding what she sees and how she sees it her work is valuable for it truly details people and
events and the terrain of Colorado over a century ago. She serves as a recorder of history, much like any observer, and her observations show the reader many conditions and
realities of the early west, even if they are tinged with her opinions and upbringing. But, that also provides insight into the culture of certain people during the time, again
providing the reader with a valuable first hand understanding of the region. The next question is "Why was it written and who
was its initial audience?" The audience appears to be anyone interested in a first hand account of a place that they will likely never go. And, it is also aimed
