to know the personality of a place, or is it constantly shifting so that it is impossible to define. Or, is it merely a subjective question, in that Los Angeles
means different things to different people? The answer may lie in some of L.A.s finest writers and their works. It can be said that just about any attribute one can
ascribe to a character can also be used to describe certain settings. A setting can be calm, at peace with itself, or seething, boiling and discontent as the odd angled
buildings and broken windows. It can be the quiet solitude of a rustic church, or the wild and garish colors of a Middle Eastern bazaar. Setting can be as active
a character in a novel and that without the ingredient of a strong setting, the plot, nor the character can move forward to the conclusion. The setting, in other words,
defines the characters that inhabit it. Anna Deavere Smith does exactly this when she sets her play, Twilight, in Los Angeles. The main character, it seems, is searching for
something, but there is also a parallelism in that the author seems to be searching for a way to describe the character of L.A. In one respect, she is trying
to come to terms with the exoneration of the policemen who beat Rodney Smith during the riots of the early 1990s, but in a completely other vein she also illuminates
the diversity that exists in just one square city block. She managed to interview Korean grocers, the police chief, a gang member, and a white juror. So, one might be
