it is actually one that contains a great deal of truth. The events we experience in the world, and the quality of our lives, is greatly determined by causal elements,
such as our associations and interactions with other people. All too often, these interactions take the form of some kind of contest, wherein each agent attempts to position his or
her self at a more favorable advantage than the other. When someone voluntarily performs an act of kindness, however, no matter how small, it qualitatively improves the circumstances of the
recipient of that kindness in such a way that it typically has reverberating effects. In this way, acts of kindness can literally be life-changing. I am still quite proud of
one particular instance in which I performed an act of kindness in my community. Some years ago, our community was affected by a bitter winter. It was a particularly
stormy season, so that it wasnt just cold, but constantly wet and damp and cold. Nearly everyone I know got the flu that year. Through the student center at my
school, I heard that some kids were going to be volunteering at a local soup kitchen to ensure that the homeless had food during an upcoming storm that was expected
to last some three days. The city was doing everything it could to keep the homeless population off the streets, as these storms were widely expected to be purely devastating.
Because I had some friends who were volunteering at the same institution in order to amass volunteer hours for their transcripts, I agreed to go along. I figured it would
be a nice thing to do and that I would get to hang out with my friends at the same time. When we arrived at the soup kitchen, however, it
