the Free French Forces in England or remain in France with his mother to whom he is devoted. In this case, a student is choosing between love of country
and love of family. Sartre tells the student that he is free to choose or invent. Here, the theorist means this in the purest sense. One can take his words
at face value because Sartre sees determinism as irrelevant and believes that people are free to choose their own fate. Hence, the judgment would be up to the son
and there is no rhyme or reason, and no additional attributes with which he could endow the solution. No one can see the future because man has free will.
Because Kant claims that people must assume that they are free, he would probably have to accept Sartres claim that the decision determines the motive. At the same time, Sartre
does claim that Kantian ethics cannot help the student in his decision either. In respect to Kantian ethics, and what appears in Metaphysics of Morals, it really is no
help. Kants moral philosophy is entrenched in an implicit idea that virtue is better than the self-serving fulfillment of happiness. In other words, living a life of virtue has its
own implicit rewards some might equate with happiness, but the instant gratification achieved through immoral pleasure is not as good. It goes beyond that. Does one give a hungry child
his or her ice-cream cone, or does one indulge in the dessert because after all, they paid the Good Humor man for it? Although the "starving children in China" will
