Commitment We are fully committed to this relationship, do not have any prior relationships or agreements that supercede this agreement, and have the fullest intention of making this a long and lasting marriage. We are both fully aware that 40-50 percent of all marriages end in divorce (Fagan and Rector, 2000), and it is our commitment at the onset of this marriage to take the necessary steps to maintain this relationship through active communication, joint decision-making, weekly scheduling and avoiding acts that will create interest in other potential partners. This commitment clause is valuable because it is a clear statement of the intent of both parties at the onset of the agreement. Communication/Disclosure We have both identified open and honest communication as a mainstay of good marriages. We are both committed to active communication and honesty, which includes responding to direct questions when asked, but also disclosing information that is pertinent to the relationship. Specifically, lies-by-omission will not be tolerated within this scope of this marriage. This statement is based on the belief that communication is essential and that it is not uncommon for individuals to not discuss certain things, even though he/she may be lying through the omission of information. Conflict Resolution We are committed to active conflict resolution, which includes open communication, avoidance of passive/aggressive communications, and direct conflict resolution. We recognize that it is not uncommon for individuals in a marriage dyad to demonstrate differing methods of conflict resolution for the same situation (Scanzoni, 1965). We accept that these different methods may exist, but agree to work towards a model for conflict resolution that includes respect for differing perspectives.
