While this is understandable, considering the pivotal position of Lincoln in American history, it has the result of turning a man into an icon. "A House Divided: America in the Age of Lincoln" is an exhibition of Lincoln memorabilia on that can be seen at the Chicago Historical Society. This powerful exhibition succeeds in making Lincoln real for the viewer as a fellow human being. In so doing, the exhibit also serves to make "real" the suffering, the trauma and the incredible devastation of the American Civil War, which truly was a war in which brother fought brother, tearing apart the fabric of a country that really would never been the same again. The story that the exhibit tells is the basic facts behind the American Civil War. How the issue of slavery divided the North and South and war brewed over the question of whether Western states would be allowed in to the Union as slave or free states. The scope of the exhibit is quite broad as it provides a comprehensive background to the American Civil War, as well as offering insight into the character of Lincoln through descriptions of his background and upbringing. However, at no point are the framers of this exhibit content with merely presenting a recitation of facts. Rather it is clear that their intention is to make the past come alive for the modern viewer though the presentation of artifacts, such as letters and personal possessions.
