and enjoy. Many people are comparing it to other novels for children that have recently come out, yet this book, the first of three, is unique and enjoyable all by
itself. The following paper provides a brief summary of the novel. A House Called Awful End This story is about Eddie Dickens. Eddie Dickens is 11 years old and
his parents have suddenly come down with an illness. They have a disease that turns "yellow, go a bit crinkly around the edges, and smell of old hot water bottles"
(Ardagh). His parents do not appear to be incredibly kind or incredibly concerned with their son, although they do not want him to catch their disease. His mother often calls
him by another name when she cant remember his real name. The house they live in seems very odd, which makes the story interesting. The author says, "Then Eddies
mother rustled the bedclothes. It was easy to make them rustle because they were made entirely from brown paper bags glued together with those extra strips of gummed paper you
sometimes get if you buy more than one stamp at the post office" (Ardagh). The story takes place in England in a time when postage stamps were a new thing.
Because the parents are sick they send Eddie to go live with his Mad Uncle Jack and his Mad Aunt Maud. They assault him with fish and make him sleep
in a trunk. Then they send him away to St Horrids Home for Grateful Orphans. Here he meets some odd and unusual people. In fact, the whole story has very
odd and unusual characters such as Eddies parents and his relatives. Eddie seems to be the only normal person in the story. This makes us really like Eddie and also
