with a land grant and on that piece of land, Williams prepared to construct a home ("Colony Of Rhode Island"). Things did not go smoothly. Williams had been informed by
Plymouths governor that he was in that colonys limits so a move was in order ("Colony Of Rhode Island"). Eventually, Williams would of course end up on a piece of
land that is today referred to as Rhode Island. The following is what happened next: "Accordingly, about the middle of June, 1636, he embarked in a canoe with five others,
and proceeded down the Narragansett River to a spot near the mouth of the Moshassuck. This he selected as a place of settlement, which, in grateful remembrance of the mercies
of God, he called Providence" ("Colony Of Rhode Island"). Williams actually referred to it as Providence Plantations (Young 4). Providence would be a colony based on farming. The settlers cleared
and fenced the land, and then they planted crops (Weiner and Arnold 1638). They also would raise cattle (Weiner and Arnold 1638). The settlers were there to stay and began
to build as well. They built homes. They also built sawmills and gristmills (Weiner and Arnold 1638). The Narragansett Indians lived there at the time but Williams would soon receive
a "verbal cession of land," and two years later, would be provided a deed to the property ("Colony Of Rhode Island"). Some friends from Massachusetts would join him and share
the land and farming in the community would begin ("Colony Of Rhode Island"). Religious toleration was at the forefront of what the people believed ("Colony Of Rhode Island"). The settlers
