and on into the 20th century up until the Second World War. It was a condition, also referred to as consumption, that killed many people until it was truly understood
by the medical community and it was not until the 1940s that an antibiotic was found to treat the condition. In looking at the history of tuberculosis one cannot ignore
the involvement of the state of New Mexico or the involvement of the railway system. The following paper examines the condition, the role played by New Mexico and how New
Mexico was involved in treating, and contracting the disease, and the role of the railroad with a discussion of segregation and oppression towards the poor with tuberculosis. Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis was causing an enormous amount of problems throughout the nation during the latter part of the 19th and almost the first half of the 20th century. In the beginning
it appears that this condition was affecting an exorbitant amount of people in the east. One author notes, in 1890, how, "fully 25 percent of all deaths in New England
and 14 percent of the deaths in Minnesota were from consumption in the previous year" (Dye, 2007; p. 17). It was clear that this condition was dangerous and that it
threatened almost everyone, regardless of social status. The disease ultimately led to many states implementing what was called a sanatoria. It is noted that, "these institutions have sprung up
in all parts of the United States, until there are now nearly two hundred and fifty special sanatoria or hospitals, and the announcement of provision for a new public or
private institution is of almost daily occurrence" (Jacobs, 1908; p. NA). This was written in 1908 and as such clearly indicated the pressing nature of the condition at the time.
