And while English is spoken a great deal around the world, it is by no means the primary language. The majority of people do no speak English as they speak a number of different languages. And while that is the case, English is looked upon as an important language and one that is spoken in most civilized nations and their hospitality industries. Many Americans are proud of the use of this language and some even want to make it an official language, something that is a hot political issue. Likely, that will never happen as Spanish has become more and more prevalent, so much so that there are many government pamphlets now printed in both English and Spanish. Still, some wonder why Americans need to learn another language. There are may reasons why it is important for Americans to learn a foreign language in an increasingly global society. Further, it is not only important for business for example, but if only one quarter of the world speaks English, then the majority of the world speaks languages other than English. Hence, there is good reason to speak the language. Yet, American public schools do not take language very seriously, requiring it for their academic degrees to an extent, but requirements vary. Certainly, they are not as stringent as the need for English grammar or Mathematics. A little under one third of elementary schools offer any foreign language instruction at all (Met, 2004).
