There are various choices when deciding how to race, and which races to enter, but Motocross is the most popular ("AMA Sports: Want to Race?"). Other AMA sanctioned activities include Arenacross, dirt track and ice racing ("AMA Sports: Want to Race?"). Supercross is another popular choice but there are quite a few others. In order to understand the evolution of motorcycle racing, it is important to examine the history of the AMA, an organization that first began in 1924 ("The History of the AMA"). Motorcycle racing began just about that time, in the early part of the twentieth century, but the activities were suspended during the Second World War ("The History of the AMA"). The bike also saw an evolution. During the 1950s dirt bikes were composed of steel frames and were rather heavy (Bonnello 9). The suspension was not good and the rider would have difficulty managing the cycles (Bonnello 9). Today, dirt bikes are built with the use of high technology and they are, as a result, lighter and faster (Bonnello 9). When discussing competitive motorcycle racing, when such racing is taken off road, one usually refers to this as motocross (McGrath 44). The motorcycle industry had been created around the sport of motocross (Bonnello 9). Motocross is a sport that some contend began somewhere in France (Youngblood). At least, that is the popular version of how things began. However, more recent and credible information suggests that the first motocross race was run in England in 1924 (Youngblood).
