This statement, made by Naipaul in the beginning of his book, A House for Mr. Biswas, gives the student a good indication that the book will be based in a large part on the experiences of the author. So, it is no surprise that A House for Mr. Biswas should take place in Trinidad and span the lifetime of one man, Mohun Biswas. If one could state the defining characteristic of Mohun Biswas it would be that of stubbornness and pride. It can also be said that pride was the driving force behind many of his decisions and in the end lead to many of Biswass decisions. The story, itself, is written about the life experiences of Mohun Biswas during the first half of the twentieth century. The setting is in the Caribbean Island of Trinidad, giving the book an exotic feel to it. Mohun Biswas, his family and most of those he interacts with are Indian and Hindu, which put them in direct conflict with a great deal of the people who are living there at the time. In fact, the same ethnic boundaries that he inwardly detests, he freely uses in his treatment of those around him. For example, his pride and his dealings with those who are not Indian, or his dealings with his children, and in his treatment of his wife. His pride is wounded of course, because of his necessary dependence on his in-laws for survival in the first part of his life. Because he desires so ardently to shake loose their hold on him, he takes on many and varied jobs, which seem to never last long enough to pull him out of his own quagmire.
