the character of the Grandmother as representative of all that is wrong with religion. With such an understanding of the myriad of ways in which this story can be analyzed
it is clear that it is a very complex and deep story that remains allusive in some respects. The following paper offers a critique of the story, through examining the
story and critical examinations of the story. A Good Man is Hard to Find One author, Hooten, speaks of OConnors short
stories that in a collection titled A Good Man is Hard to Find. While the author compares various characters, the predominant focus is that of autonomy. They note how "The
grandmother in the story A Good Man Is Hard to Find exemplifies this self-focus and self-righteousness; she initiates every problem in the story from the first sentence: The grandmother didnt
want to go to Florida" (Hooten 197). This critical analysis is actually very accurate for the Grandmother is constantly telling people what she thinks, what she believes, and she says
it all with the air of superiority. The Grandmother speaks of how " People are certainly not nice like they used to
be" (OConnor). She is discussing this perspective with the owner of an establishment she and her family are in, and this statement comes right after her granddaughter has told the
woman of the establishment that she would never live in such a place, saying, "I wouldnt live in a broken-down place like this for a minion bucks!" (OConnor). The Grandmother,
