just something astute people do not do. This is, of course, the case in her story, A Good Man is Hard to Find. If one reads this story too fast
then all one is potentially going to walk away with is mental indigestion. But for those who pause to consider the implications and the messages that she offers about religion,
satisfaction is guaranteed. Flannery OConnors piece sets the tone and offers this for readers to ponder: the Christians life revolves around preparing for their death. However, when actually faced with
that death, how real is our faith? The Grandmother and the Misfit would seem to epitomize both sides of the ecumenical coin, and as such are the vehicles by which
she moves her story and the message forward. A quick summary of the short story shows a vacationing family making many of the wrong choices for the wrong reasons that
places them in the wrong place at the wrong time. The family is eventually murdered by a band of psychopaths. In the end, though the Grandmother has attempted in everyway
to convince the leader, The Misfit, to allow her to live, she dies. Some of the early religious symbols and signs are indicated by the description of the scenery:
"the trees were full of silver-white sunlight and the meanest of them sparkled"(OConnor). This would seem to symbolize the wilderness where good and evil both exist, much like the tree
of good and evil, the tree of knowledge. It is this knowledge that takes the lives of the family, and it is the Grandmothers knowledge that does it. When they
come upon the Misfit and his men, the Grandmother cannot help but to state that she knows who he is. Thus identified the course of action is set into motion.
