Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This 5 page report
discusses the movie “Titanic” and interprets its major themes
from the formalism approach. Literary formalism virtually
always encompasses stories of epic proportions and certainly
the story of Jack and Rose, situated against the background of
one of the modern world’s most dramatic disasters, serves as
an example of such. From the perspective of formalism, it is
important to interpret James Cameron’s blockbuster movie
“Titanic” as an exercise in both symbology for great passion
and romance, as well as an understanding of the hero’s (or
heroine’s) epic journey in self-discovery and personal
awareness and understanding of the world in which he or she
exists. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

specifically to it, rather than to self-expression (foregrounding content) or social responsibility (foregrounding context). In general, formalism involves detailed inquiry into plot structure, narrative perspective, symbolic imagery, and other literary
techniques. In other words, how does the author shape the story in such a way to make its point or purpose the most obvious and/or the most meaningful? From the
perspective of formalism, it is important to interpret James Camerons blockbuster movie "Titanic" as an exercise in symbolism for great passion and romance, as well as an understanding of the
heroes (or heroines) epic journey in self-discovery and personal awareness and understanding of the world in which he or she exists. For example, Jack dies while clutching the door
that supports Rose in the icy waters. Was that the door to a better life, the future, America, wealth? Was that door a barrier between Jack and Rose?
And why could it support only her and not him? All of these questions (and many others) are interwoven when considering the movie from the standpoint of formalism. Literary
