is. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, IV (most often referred to simply as the "DSM-IV") produced by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) to serve as a manual of
diagnosis and classification. Kay Redfield Jamison (2003), a psychologist who has become well-known for her "coming out" as having bipolar disorder explains that: "The diagnosis of mental illness is called
the five-axis diagnosis. Certain things belong on each of these five axes" (Internet source). Obviously, this requires that the mental health professional has access to a great deal of information
about the day-to-day life of a person seeking treatment. This means that the professional know what is happening in his or her patients family life, work situation, physical health and
well-being, and how well he or she is functioning in terms of dealing with the challenges and pleasures of life. It is a holistic approach in which it is recognized
that any person is the sum of different parts and that all of those parts must be considered for an effective treatment. Understanding the Five-Axis Redfield explains which components
