This paper is written from the perspective of a middle aged white male living in Kentucky in 1861 just before the start of the Civil War. John
Hale was the father of three young boys, Pete, Thomas, and Willy. He is torn by the fact that many of his relatives are lobbying for seceding from the
Union. His young sons have been lured into the idea of war as a glorious affair and John knows that this very simply is not the case. John
and his family were in a unique situation in this time in history. Kentucky was a border state. Although she chose not to secede from the Union, many
of her people had southern sympathies. Many, in fact, were slave holders or had family members that were slave holders. John Hale is trying to convince his young
sons and several young boys from neighboring farms that they should try to stay neutral in the bloody war that he knew was just days away from breaking out.

with the Southern militia that is no doubt forming at this very minute. I know that your hearts are with these young boys and with those that are moving
together from further south but I want you to listen closely to what I have to say before you decide to join them.
