When writers create characters they seem larger than life, but upon contemplation, they can become rather real. They have true problems which often is integral to the plot, and so the characters may be evaluated with the use of psychological tools. With the use of family dynamic theory one can also get a better idea of how the characters connect and to demonstrate the father-son relationship, the work The Chosen by Chaim Potok will be used. The work is set in 1940s Brooklyn in a community of various Jewish sects. A baseball game brings two sects--one of which is Hassidim--together in an unusual story about two boys who develop close friendship. II. The Plot Potoks (1995) The Chosen is about a boy named Danny who is Hassidic and is planning to become a rabbi. At least, that is what his father wants him to do. An unusual friendship strikes up between Danny and another boy named Reuven, who is also Jewish but a member of a different sect. Reuven is also the narrator but both are considered protagonists. Because most Hassidic communities keep to themselves, the friendship is unusual but it emanates from a relationship on the ball field. The friendship grows as a result of an accident which is also odd. In fact, Reuven and his father recognize that the accident might have been the work of fate. The book is also replete with challenges and at the crux of the difficulty is the accident, or the fact that Danny almost blinds Reuven during sports play. While the work is about this friendship, the families of each of these boys become involved.
