a faint blush of rose in her cheeks. She lived with her father, a widower, in a cottage by the sea, where they were very happy. He was a musician,
and he played the violin while she danced. Her father died when she was seven, and she went to live in the city with her only living relative, an
elderly aunt who kept house for a very wealthy, titled family. The mansion was huge-it had over 40 rooms-and Christine felt like a princess living there. The family had a
young son whose name was Raoul, who was ten. At first he disliked having another child in the house, but soon accepted it. Raoul liked to dance too, and it
wasnt long before the boy and girl found themselves dancing every evening after school. Christine lived with her aunt in the mansion for ten years. Raoul grew up to
be very tall, with dark blonde hair and blue eyes; and he was handsome. And Christine became very beautiful. Raoul was a nobleman and he had many responsibilities, so he
traveled frequently, and sometimes he didnt really listen to her when she spoke. But each time he came home it seemed to him that Christine had grown even lovelier than
before. When she was 17 and he was 20, he asked her to marry him. Thrilled, she said yes. But there was another man in the household, a strange dark
man named Erik who tended the gardens and grew beautiful roses. Erik had a clubfoot and considered himself to be hideously ugly because of it, and he certainly couldnt dance.
But Christine loved his roses, and went every day to see them. And every day, Erik found the loveliest of them all and presented it to her. She began to
