which Miller portrays the women in this play. Two-dimensional, defined as second class citizens, trapped in worlds where their dreams are negated, these women are also shown to be incapable
of much more rational thought than the average sixteen year old. Give this, then, the portrayal of women through a feminist lens gives a clear view of how women were
perceived during the time in which Miller wrote his play. Willy Lomans life, the audience is led to believe, has been one long string of failures. He is also stuck
in a never-ending loop that leaves him wondering how anyone so well liked with so many contacts could not be successful. He is not willing, or arguably able, to embrace
the reality of the fact that he was never as big as he thought he was in his own mind. He sees the image of himself coming apart at the
seams and he is no longer able to make sense of the false image he has spent a lifetime weaving for himself. Losing his job, then, is the final catalyst
that moves him toward the only viable option he feels is left to him: death. As the play opens he has returned home to his family and for perhaps the
first time has begun to take a look at what his years of toil have produced. The comment, then, on the American
Dream is that if a mans only role in life and measure of success is how much money is earned to support his family, then Willy (and a lot of
others) are failures. The final analysis, then, is that to be a success in life, a person has to turn inward, not outward, and discover who they are and appreciate
