to the effect that even if it were true that man cannot be certain of anything, that does not mean that people cannot achieve a lot of other desirable
cognitive states such as rational belief and knowledge. This raises a very important question which is, do the skeptical arguments of the First Meditation only target a special type
or level of certainty? This is a very interesting question as some will read Descartes and assume that everything is black or white. Either one knows that they
are here or there, or they do not. Yet, the question at hand is that even if one accepts Descartess premise that does not necessarily mean that no level of
certainty exists. Also in his Second Meditation Descartes will admit that he knows something for sure, which is the fact that nothing is certain. This is more than just a
play on words. It to some extent negates or weakens the convictions of the First Meditation. However, in focusing on the First Meditation, the three skeptical arguments are that one
does not really know if he or she is dreaming, that one does not know whether the world is being run by a demon, and also, that ones sense are
not always correct. People today do question such things, but this does not preoccupy their time. If someone were to take a loaded gun and shoot since they reason they
do not know for certain if they are dreaming or that a demon is running the world and bad is good and vice versa, they would be considered crazy. While
