a situation wherein addiction becomes a problem that not only impacts and burdens society economically and culturally, but also destroys the lives of millions of individuals. As such, most states
have instituted intervention measures intended to combat addiction to relieve the economic and social burdens thereof. While many of these intervention programs, such as twelve-step programs, are not explicitly run
by the state, the state often has the power to mandate attendance of these programs for drug offenders or those individuals who commit some crime related to a substance addiction
(such as drinking and driving). However, there is a long-term tradition for the association of spirituality and addiction, such that the majority of addiction recovery programs have instituted some form
of spiritual or religious aspect. This means that there is a conflict of interests that emerges when the state has the power to mandate individual attendance of a religious oriented
recovery program; for many, this constitutes a violation of the Constitutional tenet of the separation of church and state. This paper will explore the basis of the connection between spirituality
and addiction, as well as the controversy surrounding this connection, and what might ultimately be done to improve clinical practice and evolve addiction studies. Problem Statement This
