Ethics are the principles of good and appropriate behavior. They are a system of values and moral principles, the rules of conduct for both individuals and
professions. Ethics come into play in a multitude of sometimes diverse life arenas. Professional ethics, for example, dictate the manner in which we fulfill our occupational responsibilities.
Academic ethics, in turn, dictate the manner in which we pursue our education and interrelate with others involved in that same pursuit. It is not uncommon for both professional
ethics and academic ethics to be formally detailed. Indeed, many vocations have rigidly defined professional ethics which allow them to discern professional behavior from non-professional behavior. The medical
profession, for example, has specific codes of ethics in place for its various professionals while academic institutions typically have honor codes in place with dictate the ethics expected from the
student body. It is also not uncommon for to encounter a variety of personal dilemmas in regard to these codes of ethics.
The purpose of this paper is to examine an ethical dilemma which arises in a radiological technology program for a student who is aware that a fellow student
has lied on a questionnaire administered in a blood drive. The intent of the questionnaire was to eliminate blood collection from individuals who had certain risk factors for having
been exposed to any communicable diseases. One student (Maria Garcia), recently admitted to the clinical portion of the radiologic technology program, chose to lie when asked by the questionnaire
