Rene Nere and Nancy Astley, the protagonists of Vagabond and Tipping The Velvet respectively, found out that society was not too accepting of women who went against the grain of
conformity. In fact, not only were these women condemned for their struggles as women who sought out more than the social limitations availed to them, but they also had
to face ridicule because of their sexual orientation. Given the fact that Nancy was determined to overcome the obstacles that stood in the way of her love for Kitty, it
can be argued that she persevered through some of the most difficult adversarial circumstances that existed back in the eighteen hundreds. The same can be said of Rene, a
music hall dancer who, after a very unhappy marriage and subsequent divorce, finds that she can enjoy inhabiting a world with just female companionship. The prospects for a woman to
become well-known on stage in the time and place in which both of these works took place were no better than they had been a hundred years before or after.
Indeed, the patriarchal society that existed in the era of the late 1800s through the 1950s was not conducive for women who sought to expand their horizons in the
