Greek island of Cephallonia that was before never realised. Just as author Peter Mayle enlightened readers to the beauty of Provence, de Berniere opened the doors of a little known
part of history which realistically portrayed the cultural differences of all who were involved in the conflict in the novel: the Greeks, the Italians, the Germans and the society from
which the reader himself exists. The novel explores an era in time during World War II when both the Italians and the Germans occupied the tiny Greek island of Cephallonia.
Culturally, the three nationalities were quite different despite their relative proximity to each other on a global scale. The Germans in the novel are portrayed as militant and later bloodthirsty
as they eventually massacred over 10,000 Italian troops when they fought along side the Greeks after Italys surrender in 1943 (Hall, 1998). The Greeks are wary of the occupiers of
their island, and although they come to tolerate the Italians, they explain to them that despite their growing knowledge of their language, the love of the island and the acquaintance
with the native population, they will never be, nor ever understand the Greek people. The Italians in the novel are portrayed as compassionate and utterly caught between wars and leaders
throughout the novel. Although they try and maintain their cultural identity through music, they are morally lost in environmental and political issues. While de Bernieres novel may bring tourists
flocking to the pristine beaches he described, it is the essential message of the novel that modern tourists misunderstood. The Greeks do not want visitors on the island. While slightly
different than the invasion they had to overcome during the war, the effect is the same as now Cephallonia is encountering a crime rate that has been unprecedented since the
