Introduction In the dead of winter in 1692 in
the New England Colony, Betty Parris, Abigail Williams, Ann Putnam, and Elizabeth Hubbard, all young girls of the strict Puritan faith system, began to experience what were called "fits".
These girls contended that they had been put under the spell of witches that lived within the Puritan community. Witch hysteria erupted. Hill contends witchcraft had nothing to
do with the hysteria that erupted in Salam. Journalist turned book author Francis Hills "A Delusion of Satan: The Full Story of The Salem Witch Trials" contends that the
oppressive Puritan society and the jockeying for power that was going on in that society should shoulder that blame. Hill
illuminates this horrible chapter in history through the use of a multitude of primary documents from the time. She searches relentlessly in those documents to try and find an
explanation for what prompted these young girls to make their wild accusations. Just as importantly, Hill struggles to find an explanation for why the girls fellow villagers not only
took the accusations so seriously but also why they reacted so abhorrently and unjustifiably.
