the topic of knowledge management there are number of theoretical paradigms to choose from. However, most are limited in scope and do not always apply to todays rapidly changing
corporate environment. In embarking on critical analysis of fundamental knowledge management concepts, a working definition may be created for practical application. Of course, in coming up with a concise
but practical definition, it is prudent to seek criticism and recommendations from the organization at which it is aimed. Knowledge is utilized differently in different organizations. However, a good definition
should be flexible enough to be relevant in a general sense and also be able to change with the times. II. Definitions of Knowledge Management
It is important to explore various definitions of the term. What is knowledge management exactly? The discipline is not much more than ten years old (Liebowitz, 1999). Karl Wiig
coined the term in 1986 (Liebowitz, 1999). Wiig defines it as follows: "KM is the systematic, explicit, and deliberate building, renewal, and application of knowledge to maximize an enterprises
knowledge-related effectiveness and returns from its knowledge assets" (p.1-6). Yet, while Wiig might have coined the term it is something used frequently and in different ways and so its meaning
is not necessary exactly as Wiig claims. In other words, knowledge management is a broad term and cannot be exclusively tied to one theorist. With that in mind, what are
