American traditions. Culture can extend to preferences as well. There is gay culture and death metal culture as examples. Culture is often something chosen and not necessarily something in which
one is born. It should be said that culture is a term that is widely used. It also refers to something that grows in a lab. For example, when someone
has strep throat, the doctor takes a culture and makes sure it grows in order to provide a proper diagnosis. Culture means many things, but the term has changed over
time. Its first known use according to Merriam-Webster is during the fifteenth century ("Culture"). Yet, the term has changed dramatically and has been used in hyphenated form with other terms.
An example of a new way that the term is used is in the American phrase "culture vulture" (Williams, 92). Another example is when someone experiences a reaction to a
rapid cultural shift, or when visiting a foreign land, and they are said to be in culture shock. Yet, the term enjoys a great deal of use on its own.
According to Merriam-Webster, culture can be a noun or a verb ("Culture"). For the noun, there are six definitions, the first of which only refers to cultivation or tillage ("Culture").
Yet, the fifth definition of the noun is broken down into subsections and is the most extensive. The fifth definition refers to human knowledge, customary beliefs, and a set of
shared attitudes or a set of values ("Culture"). This is the definition that many in academia have come to know. The fourth definition pertains to having taste in the arts
