to a definition of substance abuse, the DSM IV demonstrates the following: "a maladaptive pattern of substance use manifested by recurrent and significant adverse consequences related to the repeated use
of substances....must have occurred repeatedly during the same 12-month period or been persistent" (Schutt, 2003, p. 94). Alcohol is a substance and as applied to any substance, inclusive of alcohol,
there are consequences for use. When the consequences affect ones life, then it is thought that a substance is being abused. Of course, where the line is drawn is not
clear. What does become clear is when someone is an alcoholic. It seems as if, like the definition of pornography when it is ill defined but one knows it when
they see it, alcoholism is something that many people know, but certain cases remain unclear. According to the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence (NCADD), alcoholism is defined as
follows: " Alcoholism is a primary, chronic disease with genetic, psychosocial, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations. The disease is often progressive and fatal. It is characterized by
continuous or periodic: impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking, most notably denial" ("Definition of Alcoholism, 1990). This
definition is similar to the one provided by the DSM IV regarding substance abuse but this latter one is more precise and informative. Alcoholism is perhaps easily defined, but it
is not easy to aligned the definitions with actual cases. This is because the criteria relies on interpretation and often, it is only the alcoholic who is likely in denial,
