the less publicized Korean War and finally, the advent of the cold war would have already begun. People try to explain away U.S. intervention in the second world war as
unavoidable and then of course Korea is justified as well. The cold war however was something that was seemingly thrust upon America by the evil Soviet Union. In any
event, no matter who prompted American intervention, the fact remains that in some way each of these events were in the best interests of America, and in some way, they
were not. In the end, the war was either good or bad for the United States. For example, America engaged in World War II to a great extent for altruistic
reasons. At the same time, the U.S. could not avoid taking part. World War II actually began because Hitler invaded Poland in 1939 ("World," 1998). In 1941, Hitler invaded
the Soviet Union and Japan attacked the United States (1998). Once the United States had been directly attacked, it could not turn back. And although the U.S. tried to avoid
becoming involved in the "European War," the result was that the U.S. actually benefited by the action. World War II essentially boosted the American economy and when all was said
and done, there were good feelings in the United States. The fifties would soon erupt with its newfound innocence and vigor. Korea was rather different. In fact, it did little
for the United States and in fact, some suggest that it might not have happened at all if things were slightly different. Butler (2000) suggests that the Korean War might
never have been fought or it would have turned out differently had the Soviet Union and the West accurately understood each others intentions. Interestingly, one can hardly look at the
