this mean for diversity? Again, we turn to the website for the answer, which has a special section about workplace diversity. The
company actually has a dversity advisory board consisting of employees from each of Safeways major operating areas. The company also offers networking, leadership and mentoring opportunities through network groups for
women, African American, Asian, Hispanic and gay/lesbian employees. The company also supports supplier diversity, though this particular portion provides mainly platitudes about
the importance of inclusion when it comes to doing business with Safeway. Still, there is a special place for minority- and women-owned businesses to send information separate from the usual
supplier route. How does diversity help with competitive advantage? In any kind of service industry, especially the grocery industry, its always good when
the staff reflects the community around it. It wouldnt make sense, for example, to hire mainly white people from Minnesota to work for a Safeway store in Watts or Harlem,
which is predominantly African American and/or Hispanic. Because Safeway prides itself on being a neighborhood type of business, the company seems to do its level best to hire staff that
reflects the community. Furthermore, diversity is a competitive advantage in areas in which cultures, and languages, are different. For example, a large
