Though the word "motivation" is seen in a lot of different places, the definition is fairly basic - most of what is gathered
about motivation points out that motivation is an internal condition or state that activates external behavior so an individual can reach his or her goal (Huitt, 2011). Furthermore, motivation influences
needs and/or desires on intensity and directions of behavior, while helping to direct goal-oriented behavior (Huitt, 2011). To clarify, motivation is 1) internal; 2) is connected directly to a need,
want or desire and 3) directs an individuals behavior to satisfy that need or want. When it comes to motivation and behavior,
much of the literature points out that motivation is the impetus, the need and the want; while behavior is the action to obtain that need or want. For example, if
someone is interested in losing weight, what might motivate him is an image in the mirror - and if he doesnt like it, the behavior would then focus on cutting
calories and getting more exercise. This is an example of extrinsic motivation; in other words, doing something for the sake of some kind of punishment or reward (Cavazos, 2011). The
gentleman described above wants to lose weight, not because he believes it will help him feel better or to live a longer life but rather, because he hates the way
