This paper is a fictional account of two couples, one an elderly man and his wife, the other their much younger neighbors; it is told from the point of view of the two wives. The premise of the essay is that the older wife is a victim of abuse and the younger one fears she might be a victim at some point in the future. The student will want to make certain that it is clear the characters are fictional and if they bear any resemblance to actual people, that resemblance is accidental. Discussion Robert and Mabel Carnegie are in their 80s and have been married for over 50 years. The relationship, as most do, started out as a loving and caring one, but over the years it has deteriorated to the point where Robert is verbally and physically abusive to Mabel. Most of his abuse takes the form of verbal abuse and threats, although he has beaten her on several occasions. As Mabel looks back over the decades she has shared with this man, she sees that his abuse follows a pattern, and she tells herself it is all her fault. Early in their marriage she became pregnant, and he was extremely unhappy about the child. He wanted to become established before they had children and feels that she tricked him by becoming pregnant within the first year of the marriage. She blames herself and has begun to believe that everything that has gone wrong in the marriage is her fault, and that he is justified in his behavior toward her.
