order to manage them and facilitate increased understanding, overcoming personal constraints that many limited the efficiency of interaction and the ability to increase understanding (Gudykunst, 2003). In undertaking an
experience where there is a new cultural experience the decision to choose an experience that is completely alien was attractive, but many culture experiences are not this extreme. It was
in asking around that I was eventually offered the chance to attend a Voodoo ritual. This was an unusual and unique opportunity to observe a culture extremely different to that
seen in mainstream cultures in the western nations, and provided a good tool in order to assess my own actions and attitudes towards culturally different practices. 2. The Event
In order to understand the ritual it is important to understand a ittle background to the ritual. Vodun as a religion is
followed by the majority of adults in the island of Haiti, it can be found be followed in many of the major cities in North America, particular in the Southern
