Oscar winner, Slumdog Millionaire. Discussion That a film with Indian actors as the leads could take home eight Oscars, including Best Picture, is perhaps a sign that the United States and its film industry are finally growing up and recognizing that other people besides Americans know how to make movies. Indeed, Bollywood, the Indian version of Hollywood, makes hundreds of films a year, many of them quite good. Although the director of Slumdog Millionaire, Danny Boyle, is an Englishman, his co-director Loveleen Tandan is Indian as is his cast; the film was shot in India and the story centers on a young Indian, Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) from the slums who goes on to win the Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? The film is told with the help of flashbacks that fill us in on the Jamals history, how he came to be on the show, and how he got to be so astonishingly knowledgeable. He is so good, in fact that the police believe hes cheating; he finally convinces them, by explaining that many of the things in his life are like the questions, that he is both smart and lucky. They let him go, he answers the last question, and wins the money-and the girl hes wanted for years; shes the reason hes in the contest in the first place. The film is uplifting and heartbreaking at the same time, because it juxtaposes the extreme poverty and hardship of many Indians with the enormous wealth and luxury represented by the show and those associated with it. There is tragedy as well: Jamal and his brother Salim live very different lives, with Salim going to work for a gang boss and paying, in the end, the ultimate price for his violent lifestyle.
