is designed to initiate a writing sequence and promote expressive writing through comparisons with literary characters in books that have been read in the class. This lesson asks the students to look at the characters that have been included in the reading segments of the class, including Holden Caulfield, Huckleberry Finn, Hester Prynne, Romeo and Juliet, Ethan Fromme and others. The students are asked to think about these people in the modern era, within the scope of their own lives, and in terms of their central characteristics. The students are then asked to pick one or two (no more than three) characters with whom the student shares similar characteristics and describe the traits that are shared. The student can compare and contrast their own traits with one character, or show that they are a composite of two characters. The essays created from this process can be presented to the class and students will be graded both on their composition and the level of creativity in creating their comparisons. This lesson could be adapted for children with special needs by creating some lists of the characters that have been studied and their characteristics. This "brainstorming" component of the assignment could be adapted to provide the special needs students with a starting point for the lesson. Students could also work in pairs to discuss the characteristics and make comparisons, an element that would help children with learning disabilities gain some greater understanding of how other students might perceive themselves in the comparisons. Another option for adapting this lesson would be to work through the brainstorming component, when students assess characteristics and make personal comparisons, as a class and then allow the students the opportunity to write their own essays.
