25, 2003, A Woman Soldiers Own Story: The Autobiography of Xie Bingying is the first English translation of a book detailing a much different time in history. Xie Bingying
lived between 1906 and 2000. Her early life was spent in pre-revolution China. Xie found herself almost suffocated by the expectations of her traditional family and by traditional
Chinese culture in general. She yearned for knowledge and excitement but her society demanded that she instead emphasize qualities such as obedience and domesticity. Chinese women and girls
during this time in history lived within an extremely rigid social hierarchy, a hierarchy which determined such facets of their lives as who they married and even such minor aspects
of their lives as what foods they ate and clothing they wore. Women in the period of Chinese history portrayed in Xies autobiography were largely viewed as valueless.
Xies book illustrates that female value and individuality was deemed non-existent. In this time period of Chinese history females were not allowed to
voice their thoughts or even to acknowledge the existence any thoughts that were considered inappropriate by the patriarchal society which so rigidly dominated every aspect of their lives. As
a child Xie was not even supposed to play outside with members of the opposite sex, not supposed to seek education, supposed to conform when all she desired was nonconformity,
not even supposed to voice her thoughts. Xies society was intent not only of binding her feet but binding her mind and her spirit and Xie was determined that
she would somehow prevent this binding. Prevent it she did and in so doing she managed to liberate not only herself but also those that would follow her lead.
