They were bombarded by adventure or emotion and they come out from their viewing with a part of the film still with them. That is perhaps why the movie business is so lucrative. Sometimes a film comes along that has more than entertainment value. Sometimes a film has a lot to say in addition to tweaking emotions. Such a film is Raging Bull. This movie, like other boxing films, appeals to the emotions and is particularly geared to men. It can render even the most virile male incapable of holding his tears back as emotionally, the audience is drawn to the characterization of the boxer, played by Robert DiNiro. Perhaps the authenticity is attributable to the fact that the film is based on a true story. The story is about real life Jake LaMotta, a former middleweight champion (Bunn E2). Part of the magic of the film which certainly adds to the emotional undertones may have had to do with the Scorcese-DiNiro combination. Later, Scorcese would use DiNiro in Casino, a work also starring Sharon Stone. It is likely that DiNiro, a highly acclaimed actor put a lot of himself into the film and also Scorcese was brilliant as usual. Good casting and direction certainly enhanced what could have been a rather ordinary story line. The film is about the life of a boxer but it is rather introspective as opposed to focusing on events, or outward rewards of boxing.
