It has been often postulated that inter-personal joint working with other services by social services could add value to the service they offer, creating efficiency and a more streamlined service for the clients. There have been many documents or papers calling for a higher level of inter-personal joint working. These have been published over the last few decades, however, even recently there remain the calls for more joint working. In looking at the reasons there also appear to be underlying economic motivations. This is reflected in the 2002 document published by the government "Better Public Services Through Joint Working" (Leason, 2002). In this is was stated that money could be saved by "removing overlap and duplication in service delivery and by not reinventing the wheel" (Leason, 2002). In this same document it was also noted that there were other benefits. If social services and the hospitals worked together an example cited was that of enabling older patients to be released from hospital earlier, which as well as saving money and freeing up thousands of bed, it would also reduce the stress for the patient (Leason, 2002). The idea of joint working may have different manifestations, one of these may be the development of single units with mixed discipline staff or organisations that bring the different discipline together (Leason, 2002).
