ways, however, traditional Taoists of contemporary times are a people who are torn between two life styles, that of tradition and that of the modern world. That in itself
serves as an excellent example of Yin and Yang. To illustrate the example presented above, consider the teachings on which Taoism is based.
Many scholars credit this origin to the philosopher Lao Tzu, a name which translates to mean "Old Sage" (Lao Tzu: Father of Taoism, 2002). It is
said that Lao Tzu was an archivist of the imperial court (Lao Tzu: Father of Taoism, 2002). At the age of eighty he is said to have left those duties,
disillusioned by the fact that men were more inclined to poor behavior than good behavior (Lao Tzu: Father of Taoism, 2002). Obviously, Lao Tzu was witnessing the inner conflict of
those among who he lived and worked. The were conflicted between good and bad, a conflict that is experienced even today by modern Taoists as well. It might
be contended that in our modern world, however, that conflict is even greater. When considering Yin Yan it is important to remember that Lao Tzus Taoism is more concerned with
an individual relationship with nature (Lao Tzu: Father of Taoism, 2002). Lao Tzus Taoism, in fact, rejected the social regulation which was the premise of Confucianism (Lao Tzu: Father of
