St. Teresa (1515-1582) was a Spanish nun whose life underwent a series of trials and tribulations not unlike that of her beloved Catholic Church. Her refreshingly candid and deeply personal autobiography describes her early years, during which she nearly succumbed to superficial temptations and excessive vanity that resulted in illness of the body and spirit. The choice of an autobiographical style of writing is important because it demonstrates how Teresa sought to take her message directly to the people. The text is not overwhelmed by religious doctrine or theory; it is a detailed chronicle of one individuals painful path of suffering, which eventually led her to a complete and uncompromising commitment to her God. As Teresa explains in her memoirs, the notion of sainthood was not some abstract concept involving the glorification or divinity of an individual. Instead, she utilized the saints as instructional tools that enabled her to deepen her spiritual commitment. She recognized St. Joseph in particular as one that revealed to her the considerable benefits of prayer. It was to St. Joseph Teresa turned when she suffered a paralyzing illness - her illnesses were depicted not as physical in nature but as her souls struggles against temptation - and was miraculously cured.
