The line between reality and fantasy is nearly obscured as real events and entertainment have practically become one (de Seife). For example, is Joe Millionaire a real person or is he simply an actor pretending to be a millionaire? Was The Blair Witch Project actually comprised of three ill-fated Maryland film students or was it nothing more than a cinematic illusion consisting of three actors using their own names and participating in a fictional work that passes for reality simply because it was filmed in a documentary style? Because the documentary has become such a popular source of cable TV information as evidenced by the popularity of A&Es Biography or by the E! True Hollywood Story, it should come as no surprise that the mockumentary, or the fictitious or "mock documentary" should fare well with movie audiences. While its origins are questionable, with some film historians opining the first mockumentary harkens back to the silent film era, most critics believe the actual timeline began around the 1970s. University of Wisconsin film student Ethan de Seife opines Mitchell Blocks 1973 dramatic short, No Lies, represents "one of the earliest mock documentaries" (de Seife). Its premise concerns a male film student who turns his camera on his female friend as she prepares for a date (de Seife). It all seems quite ordinary until the film subject reveals she has been recently raped; when the filmmaker inquires further, the girl becomes highly agitated by the intrusive presence of the camera, all of which is captured on celluloid (de Seife).
