made up of immigrants. Indeed, immigrants have flooded into U.S. borders since the earliest years in the countrys history. Today, however, the immigrant population has risen to an
alarming height. Many that have immigrated here are long term residents. Others are recent arrivals. Brunner and Colarelli (2010) note that in 2004 some twelve percent of
those that live in the US were born elsewhere. Pastor (2006) summarizes that the number of Mexican immigrants in the US alone has increased from one million in the
mid 1990s to an estimated six million in 2006. Despite the fact that many of these immigrants play a positive role in U.S. society and economy, many regret their
presence. The intent of this paper is to review immigration and to assess whether it is more of a positive phenomena or a negative phenomena.
There is a tremendously positive side to immigration. Higgins (2008) is just one author that is cognizant of the benefits open borders allow. He emphasizes
the fact that immigrants fill a number of critical roles in U.S. society. Although they are less likely to have high school degrees than are American born citizens (Larsen,
2003), they are a critical component of our workforce. Many immigrants take jobs that Americans are simply not willing to fill. Immigrants are a particularly critical component of
the agricultural workforce, for example. Those that support immigration believe that the hard-earned money immigrants make in those types of jobs is, in turn, spent buying American goods and
services. Immigrants then are a critical component of our economy. These supporters contend that without immigrant labor and immigrant purchases our economy would plummet both nationally and locally.
