movement of the 1960s but its roots can be traced to just after the Civil War and the addition of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution. Included in the
Fourteenth Amendment is a requirement that all states provide equal protection of the laws. For a time some minorities were provided some degree of special consideration but in 1875
the Supreme Court declared that the time had come to dispense of those special considerations based on race. The now infamous
Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court decision of 1896 ruled that the provisions of the Fourteenth Amendment could be met with separate but equal public accommodation. This decision would hold
until its challenge in 1954 by Brown v. Board of Education. In Brown v. Board of Education the Supreme Court overturned Plessy v. Ferguson and ruled that the nations
schools must be integrated rather than maintaining separate but equal facilities. Many more major decisions would be forthcoming in the 1960s. Affirmative
Action is not a single idea or tool, instead it is a multitude of ideas and tools used to increase the presence and condition of minorities and women in previously
white male dominated roles. This includes not only employer/employee situations, but also school demographics, voter demographics and numerous other arenas where race and gender has historically been an issue.
