is the sun" is a metaphor. These literary devices make the language very rich. This paper chooses a metaphor for a persons life. Discussion Since the student has been asked
to choose a metaphor for his life, and then use it to trace his experiences, the one that suggests itself immediately is both simple and obvious: Life is a journey.
Its been used over and over again, but that doesnt make it inappropriate or untrue. With this as a starting point, the student can discuss the various episodes in his
life to this point. Its probably fair to say that most people have many of the same experiences, and they tend to fall into similar categories: earliest memories, childhood,
school, dating, work, college, first loss, career and so on. Most people have most of these in common, yet at the same time each is unique to each person. It
seems logical to suggest that the student can provide a solid structure for the essay, and demonstrate the usefulness of the metaphor, by considering the journey chronologically. Starting with
childhood, the student can discuss what he remembers of his earliest years, the friends he made, what his home was like, his relationship - good or bad - with his
parents and siblings, and anything that made a particularly vivid impression. Most people remember events from their childhood with startling clarity, perhaps a special holiday celebration or a special pet,
or appearing in a play for the very first time. If the family is religious, this is a good place to talk about the experience of going to church, which
