Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 10 page analysis of Orem's theory utilizing the eleven step analysis entailed by J. Wilson's concept analysis style. The author works through this analysis step by step isolating the questions of content, detailing the process through which the right answers can be found, and discussing model cases verses cases that are contrary, related, borderline, and invented. The author then discusses Orem's contentions as they relate to a social context, details the underlying anxiety that characterizes some cases, and finalizes the paper with a discussion of the practical results and a summarization of these results in language. Care Deficit Nursing Theory (SCDNT) is one of three theories found in Orems General Theory of Nursing. This theory evolved in the 1960s and 1970s alongside several other key
nursing theories. Utilizing the concept analysis approach proposed by Wilson (1969) we can clarify the definition of Orems theory and expand on the meaning of that theory as it
relates to other key nursing theories. Wilsons (1969) concept analysis involves an eleven step process. Those steps include: 1.
Isolating questions of concept 2. Finding right answers 3. Model cases 4. Contrary
cases 5. Related cases 6. Borderline cases 7. Invented cases 8.
Social context 9. Underlying anxiety 10. Practical results 11. Results in language
These steps allow us to determine both similarities and differences between Orems theories and those of others.
The intention of this paper is to work through each of these steps and to clarify the defining attributes of the concept of self care deficit, as outlined in
Orems theory, and to identify the antecedents that influence self care deficit and the possible consequences of the self care deficit. Walker and Avant (1995), nursing scholars who adapted
their own approach to concept analysis from Wilson (1969) contend that concept analysis allows the examination of conceptual attributes and characteristics. This paper will identify these attributes and characteristics
