obstacle in the educational environment in particular (Reid, Trout, and Schartz, 2005). Despite the fact that boys are more often referred for treatment for ADHD than are girls, Biederman,
Kwon, Aleardi, and Chouinard (2005, 1083) report that there are no differences between males and females in regard to the clinical correlates of ADHD.
Unfortunately, ADHD does not always resolve itself when a child reaches puberty (Wolraich, Wibbelsman, Brown, Evans et. al., 2005). ADHD can also affect adults. Indeed, although ADHD
most often manifests in childhood, it can persist throughout life (Schachar, Crosbie, Barr, Ornstein, et. al., 2005). The condition is believed by many to be physiologically based and/or related
to environmental conditions encountered by a fetus while it is still in the womb of its mother. There is considerable controversy, however, as to whether ADHD is indeed physiological
or environmentally induced. Rubia, Smith, Brammer, Toone, and Taylor (2005, 1067) suggest that ADHD is a:
"generalized impulsivity disorder, with the traits of impulsivity manifesting at the motor, emotional, social, and attentional levels"
Regardless of its true cause, ADHD has the potential to cause a variety of disruptive behaviors in the academic, social and work aspects of an individuals
life. Symptoms include inattention, hyperactivity, impulsiveness, forgetfulness, carelessness and inability to process information. Diagnosis and treatment of ADHD can be difficult (Wolraich, Wibbelsman, Brown, Evans et. al., 2005).
