todays society--mostly promoted by Disney and American pop culture--but is really a representation of stories which emanated from the infamous Brothers Grimm. Yet, while Disney cartoons contain some elements of
violence, and despair, they are by and large happy and light. For example, Cinderella gets her price in the end, and right wins out. Yet, the Grimm fairytales were based
more on the dismal state of existence at the time in which they were written. For example, in the Grimm version of Beauty and the Beast, there is a definite
sense of class, with attention to poverty. In the Brothers Grimm version of this tale, it seems that the family is wealthy but then the merchant loses his money.
The two eldest daughters are rejected by their lovers when it is found that they no longer are well off. Everyone in the family is miserable except for Beauty who
has not a materialistic bone in her body. Aside from other themes in the work, such as appearance --as the obvious discrepancy between a beautiful girl and a ghastly beast
is obvious--social stratification is certainly apparent. Similarly, in Cinderella, it is the poor step-sister who is used and abused. While others pretend to be suitable for the prince, it is
Cinderella who mesmerizes him. Here, there is a class difference between Cinderella and the prince, but royalty is uplifted, which reinforces the notion that class status is important. Snow White
is also born into a poor family. Poverty and the dismal nature of life is brought forth in these stories that are supposed to be suitable for children, contain morals
